North East Strategy For The Environment
Environment Editor for The Journal, Tony Henderson comments on the NE region's first strategy to protect one of its greatest assets - the environment. Among the issues which the strategy examines is Transport.
The strategy is the work of the North East Environmental Forum, a coalition of around 30 regional bodies.
The strategy states:
"The region faces some tough transport challenges. These include rising levels of car ownership."
It goes on to say:
"We must be clear that uncontrolled expansion of the transport infrastructure to enhance the economy is unsustainable and short sighted. The forecasted rise in oil prices and impact on climate change means that we must develop sustainable transport links and communication techniques to reduce the need to travel long distances."
