KIRKLEATHAM BUSINESS PARK WORKING TOWARDS A GREENER FUTURE
The Travel Plan for Ravensworth Property Developments site on Kirkleatham Business Park has the potential to drastically reduce the number of single occupancy cars arriving at the site, subsequently tackling the growing parking problem and restricting further road congestion in the area.
Kirkleatham Business Park is located in Redcar. Situated adjacent to some of the principal highways and close to Teesport, this 68 hectare greenfield development site has the potential to be one of the region’s major strategic sites - all the more reason therefore, to consider the Park’s effect on traffic in the area and accept its social responsibility for the ever increasing concern of road congestion.
Following a steady increase of businesses at the site over the last few years and with a recent surge in developments – which saw the new Langbaugh Police Headquarters opened late last year - the Business Park has seen increased traffic on surrounding roads which has resulted in severe parking issues in certain parts of the site.
Ravensworth Property Developments is developing a site within the business park to house 17 businesses which will mean 100 extra employees arriving at the site daily. It was apparent to Ravensworth Property Developments, developer of the site, that a Travel Plan was going to be an important tool in managing transport at the Park.
Developing the Travel Plan
In the early stages of Ravensworth Property Developments plans for their development, a planning condition became essential to the completion of the site, highlighting the need to design a Travel Plan to support the current and future growth at the Park.
Further establishing its relationship with The Workplace Travel Plan Company, Redcar and Cleveland Council has assisted Ravensworth Property Developments with its Travel Plan. Having been encouraged by the company to work together, both organisations have developed the foundations of a successful travel initiative which will fully support the Park’s expansion.
Created in response to the emerging need and market for Travel Planning, The Workplace Travel Plan Company designed a range of customised products to combat the negative issues of road congestion. Its signature product, the Travel Plan Builder website, is a unique web-based package which helps the user to create and implement a Travel Plan.
By encouraging the client to re-consider its organisation’s travel methods, the Travel Builder website tool assesses the available travel arrangements to and from the site. The process allows the client to think about alternative methods for its staff, such as public transport, safe bike shelters, company cars and car sharing rotas, all of which can positively impact on the congestion and parking issues.
Janet Easley, Senior Sustainable Transport Officer at RCBC said:
“The Workplace Travel Plan Company has created an excellent product. The builder software is an effective system to implement Travel Plans and I am thrilled with the results so far. I look forward to seeing this Travel Plan develop as Kirkleatham Business Park grows and hope to develop the relationship with the Workplace Travel Plan Company in the future.”
Geoff Clark, Development Manager at Ravensworth Property Developments LLP added:
“It became clear early on in the development of Ravensworth Property Developments proposal for Kirkleatham Business Park that a Travel Plan was important for the success of the Park, and to minimise traffic congestion within the immediate area.
“It is important for organisations to consider their corporate social responsibility and Ravensworth is committed to counteracting the effects that our company’s developments may have on the local community.
Other measures:
The Travel Plan has the potential to see the number of cars arriving at the site reduced and subsequently improved the parking and road congestion issues in the area. To support and continue this success the Local Authority plans to contact each new tenant to provide a handbook which will give the organisation all the relevant information and guidance it needs to ensure its involvement in the business park’s Travel Plan is a success.
Peter Wignall, Managing Director of The Workplace Travel Plan Company commented:
“Ravensworth Property Developments at Kirkleatham Business Park is a perfect example of why the Travel Plan Builder website was created. It demonstrates the ease of implementing such a worth while scheme and shows the positive impact it can have on both the organisation and the local community which is usually most affected by the increased traffic that results from new sites being developed.
“I am pleased to see this software has been recognised by key developers in the region and hope to see it being used further afield to improve the effects of increased traffic on the roads.”
Geoff Clark added:
“I am delighted with how things have progressed. The Travel Plan Builder website uses direct dialogue with relevant contacts at the Local Authority ensuring a speedy and simple process for all parties. I would certainly recommend the Travel Plan Builder website.”
